Latency

LATENCY IS THE #1 TECHNICAL ISSUE AFFECTING INTERACTIVITY

"Latency Period" is defined as the time the A/V signal takes to make a round-trip between two points. Measured in milliseconds, it is the single characteristic that does the most to affect the qualities of intimacy, immediacy and responsiveness you should require.

Teliris has engineered its network capabilities from the ground up to minimize the latency period, and to deliver the genuine sense of "being there" that Interactive Telepresence requires. All of the remarkable qualities of the network--from DVD and HD-quality video and sound all the way to document messaging--were developed within the operational constraints of minimizing latency. As a result, we are able to demonstrate a level of speed and consistency in our environments that any competitor is hard-pressed to match.

THE PROOF IS IN THE EXPERIENCE

Studies have been done to establish the level of latency that will inhibit genuine interactivity, and Teliris has taken the lead in providing an experience in latency engineering that consistently falls well within that threshold of immediacy.

Be aware, though, that the true test of immediacy is not measured in milliseconds, but in the experience itself. Measures of latency periods are notoriously hard to compare, given that testing usually happens in separate, controlled environments, and peak latency levels can be significantly different than average latency over time. The ultimate test of immediacy and interactivity is experiencing the product itself, in a real-world environment, and as you can see from the testimonials spread throughout the site and available in our "News" area, our solutions invariably demonstrate a unique and revolutionary level of "telepresence" when seen in practice.

“In fact, in a videoconferencing tool, interactivity is of major importance, Generally, it is acknowledged that for a highly interactive dialogue, delays between users have to be less than 250 ms.”
